Description

Large late C19th / early C20th Italian ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir bronze study , after the antique, of Pan and infant Bacchus.
Superbly cast study depicting Pan with the infant Bacchus astride his shoulders, in his hands he holds cymbals, whilst his pipes are shown resting upon the tree-stump wrapped with a vine and grapes , against which he leans.
The infant Bacchus , god of wine and merriment, is shown holding a bunch of grapes as the two subjects gaze at each other. Pan the mythical woodland faun , is shown with a modesty fig-leaf to the front of his naked body, whilst he has a tail of a creature above his buttocks.
Pan and Bacchus are often closely associated in mythology , with Pan often acting as a wild rustic companion in the retinue of the wine god . Whilst Bacchus represents wine , theatre and ecstasy, Pan is the god of shepherds and wild nature , both symbolising fertility , untamed revelry and nature’s wild side .
Excellent consistent colour and patina , with fine cast detail , particularly to the faces , hands and musculature of the torso .Raised and mounted upon a block plinth base of figured black and white marble.
An impressively scaled and presented bronze sculpture in excellent original condition.
