Pair of late C19th Italian ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir carved serpentine marble reductions , after the antique, of the hound of Alcibiades, or “Jenning’s Dog” .
Carved prato verde marble studies of the 2nd century AD Roman marble copy of the ancient Hellenistic bronze original. The marble study of the mastiff was acquired by Henry Constantine Jennings in Rome between 1753 and 1756 as part of his collection of sculpture and brought to England for his home at Duncombe Park . The sculpture is now exhibited at The British Museum, London, having been saved for the nation .
