Description

Scarce pair of early C19th Regency period cast bronze door-porters or ‘stops’.
Modelled as snarling lions standing over serpents in a naturalistic setting , having an aged light verdigris patination and surface , the loop-handle of the snake’s coiled body showing wear from handling and revealing the patina of the bronze beneath.
The bases of the versos having their original lead and mortar in-fills to provide further stability.
The symbolism of the lion over the snake or serpent , being of strength and protection, or good over evil .
Rare pair of bronze door-porters in excellent original condition.
