Description
Large early C19th George IV period 60” diameter rosewood dining or centre table .
The highly figured ‘book-matched’ rosewood veneered top with an unusual reeded moulded edge with carved ‘reel’ details at the quarters of the circumference and having a shallow frieze surround below .
Raised on a central circular tapering column pillar support with carved acanthus leaf detail collar and a leaf-carved ring . The triform concave-sided base with carved moulded detail to all the edges and raised on carved scroll classically-inspired design feet with concealed brass castors beneath.
The underside of the top fitted with the original large gilded brass sprung pull-handle and gilt-brass screw-in bolts to the block , allowing the table to be tilted when required.
The figured rosewood top of good mellow colour and patina, with some minor historic water-stain spots and marks , the centre with a slightly darker shade to the polish where perhaps a vase or centrepiece previously stood. The top being completely flat and true.
No damage, losses or repairs.
An impressively-scaled table of broad diameter and practical height and design, which would accommodate 8 diners comfortably, the circular design allowing for convivial and social dining . The height of the table and shallow depth of the frieze offering good seating clearance.
The quality of the table , the construction, selection of timber together with the carved details and mouldings , perhaps alluding to an attribution to the esteemed cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster.
*iNB In our stock inventory we have a set of 8 George IV period rosewood framed dining chairs which would complement this table to form a dining room suite .
