Description

Pair of finely cast C19th ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir classical bronze statuettes of “Mercury” and “Fortuna” , after Giambologna.
The studies after the Renaissance sculptor known as Giambologna (1529-1608) , in the Mannerist style , depict Mercury, messenger to the Gods and Fortuna , goddess of good luck . Each shown in an elegant pose , poised on the head of a Zephyr and raised on the wind .
The Roman god Mercury , known as Hermes to the Greeks, is shown with his winged helmet and winged heels for flight , holding his caduceus , a herald’s staff entwined with snakes . The companion figure of Fortuna is depicted holding a trumpet, each with their arm raised to the heavens .
The cast heads of the Zephyrs each bearing a facsimile signature of “Giambologna”.
Each figure is mounted upon a stepped and turned circular base of ‘giallo di siena’ marble.
A highly decorative and elegant pair of classical bronzes sculptures in excellent original condition with a rich and consistent colour and patina.
