Late C19th Italian bronze ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir sculpture , after the antique , “Mercury Resting” .
Smaller scale bronze reduction copy of the iconic Hellenistic original which was excavated at the Villa of the Papyri, Herculaneum in 1758 now exhibited in the Museo Archeologico , Naples , Italy.
The Roman demi -god Mercury , known to the Greeks as Hermes , in mythology was messenger to the Gods , is depicted naked sat on a naturalistically-cast rocky outcrop , wearing his winged sandals and holding a missive .
Consistent patina with only minor high-points .
