Interesting pair of framed C19th plaster studies of the “Waterloo Medal” after the Italian sculptor Benedetto Pistrucci.
Framed in green-stained moulded profile wooden frames and within a gilded slip and a green mount , the large central cast plaster study of the medal commissioned in 1849 to celebrate and commemorate the allied victory over the forces of Napoleon.
One panel depicts the side of the medal showing the profile portraits of the allied leaders , George, Prince Regent ; Emperor Francis I of Austria; Tsar Alexander I of Russia; King Frederick William III of Prussia. The edge of the medal with a mythological allegory evoking peace . The medal surrounded by further other smaller classical plaster intaglios.
The second panel shows the obverse side of the Waterloo Medal , and depicts equestrian figures of Castor and Pollux representing Wellington and Blucher , the surrounding design representing the defeat of the French in the Napoleonic wars , and depicts Apollo in his chariot followed by Zephyr and Iris , representing order and peace . Similarly mounted and surrounded by further classical plaster intaglios.
In excellent original condition. The medal with clear , well-cast detail .
* The medal was commissioned in 1819 by the British Government at the request of King George IV ( then Prince Regent ) and were to be presented to the victorious general of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and to the leaders of the allies . However by 1849 most of the intended recipients had died , relations with France had improved and consequently the medal was never struck .
