Mid C19th Chinese export brass-bound leather and camphor chest or coaching trunk.
With domed-stud decoration and brass bindings the the dark green leather-covered camphor wood body . The brass-hinged lid opening to reveal the strikingly figured camphor interior, fitted with a brass ring handle and a shield-shaped escutcheon plate. The ends having brass carrying handles .
Produced in the Canton region of China for export to the West , the use of perfumed camphor wood providing protection from insects and infestation to the contents .
In excellent original condition with only minor losses to stud decoration. Some scuffs and marks commensurate with age , use and purpose. Dark, aged patina to the leather and a bronzed verdigris patination to the brass.
