Mid C19th Chinese export brass-bound leather-covered camphor trunk or coaching chest .
The brass-bound leather and camphor trunk with carrying handles to the ends , decorative domed-studs and colourful hand-painted trailing floral decoration. The brass-hinged lid with a loop handle , opening to reveal the camphor wood interior. The front having a shaped and engraved escutcheon plate . The choice of scented camphor being to serve as an insect repellent to protect the contents.
The brass fittings and binding having achieved a desirable aged ‘bronzed’ colour and patina. The leather of a dark green aged hue .
In excellent original condition with only minimal losses to studded decoration . Wear to surface commensurate with age , use and purpose.
