Pair of early C19th Italian bronze ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir studies , after the antique, of “The Dying Gaul “ and the “Borghese Gladiator”.
Pair of small-scale bronze studies of the iconic ancient marble sculptures, mounted on their original siena marble block plinth bases .
The well-cast bronze reductions both having a rich consistent dark patination . Some loss to the study of “The Dying Gaul “ , the discarded sword lacking from the base. The ‘marmo giallo di siena’ marble bases having achieved a good aged surface and patina, with some minor historic chips to corners.
Smart pair of desk-top classical bronze studies having been cast in Italy to be sold as souvenirs to wealthy tourists completing the cultural ‘Grand Tour’ of the European sites and sights .
*Provenance: From the private collection of a Worcestershire gentleman, having been acquired at a Shropshire house auction in the mid 1950’s .
