C19th Italian gilt bronze ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir reduction, after the antique, of “The Albani Vase” .
Well-cast larger scale bronze reduction of the ancient carved marble krater vase ,known as “The Albani Vase” .
The body cast in high relief with masks of bearded gods amongst drapery and lion pelts , with a band of vines and leaves above , the top edge having an ovolo cast rim . The twin handles cast as intertwined vines, the whole raised on a fluted socle base .
The marble original discovered in Rome in the eighteenth century during the excavation of a villa sponsored by Cardinal Alessandro Albani , the great collector of ancient art and antiquities.
The ancient marble original was thought to have been sited outside the Temple of Bacchus.
In excellent original condition with a mellow colour and patina to the gilded bronze.
