Description

C19th Italian carved statuary marble ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir bust study of Caesar Augustus.
Raised on a turned and polished socle base , the well-carved study depicts the young Emperor in a forward-facing pose .
Gaius Julius Augustus Caesar (63 BC -14 AD) also known as Octavian , was the founder of the Roman Empire. He reigned as the first Roman Emperor from 27 BC until 14 AD . The reign of Augustus initiated an imperial cult as well as the era of imperial peace , or ‘Pax Romana’ , a period where the Roman world was largely without armed conflict.
In excellent original condition with a clean surface to the white statuary marble .
