Description

Elegant late C18th George III Sheraton period mahogany ladies’ cheveret or ‘bonheur-de-jour’ table.
Highly versatile and adaptable figured mahogany table with boxwood stringing . The lift-off upper section book-carrier with a ‘hoop’ handle above an arrangement of drawers all fitted with turned ibone knob-pulls and escutcheons.
The table raised on tapering square-section legs fitted with brass box-castors , having a concave-sided lower tier . The front lateral frieze with a simulated drawer-front , the end fitted with a long drawer , the opposing end with a pivoting half-round drawer fitted with a pen-rest and ink-bottles .All drawers fitted with original turned bone knobs and escutcheons and supplied with keys . The rising brass-hinged top for reading or drawing fitted with an adjustable ratchet , and with a removable reeded book-rest .
Of free-standing form , polished on all sides .
The interior of the central drawer of the upper book-carrier section fitted with a retailers label for “Norman Adams , Hans Road , London SW1” the celebrated and now-closed London dealership in fine English period furniture.
The design and quality of this table point to possibly being by the esteemed cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster. A design for a similar “sheveret” table appears in ‘Gillows Esimate Sketch Book’ of 1790 , July 5th , and illustrated in Lindsay Boynton “Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800”
In excellent original condition with a rich original colour and patina, minor historic marks to the top .
