Description

Early C19th George IV period rosewood sewing or work table , in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster.
Fine quality rosewood table with quarter veneered , cross-banded rectangular hinged top with an inlaid central compass or star motif . The edge of the table with a moulded edge.
The lid rising to reveal divisions and compartments with a central star-inlaid lid over a pin cushion. Fitted with original brass lock and steel key .
Of free-standing form , the friezes of the top with cross-banded panels simulating drawer fronts and having inlaid diamond-shaped escutcheons, with corresponding design to verso , and having cross-banded sides. Raised on a tapering triangular stem with moulded edges , onto a triform concave-sided platform base. The whole raised on carved lion’s paw feet of exaggerated design. The terminals with carved acanthus leaf motifs , the sides of the feet with classically-inspired carved scroll brackets .
In excellent original condition, with a rich colour and patina. The top having a minor shrinkage crack to the centre , and having minor marks commensurate with age and use .
The quality of construction, design of mouldings and overall form , leading towards an attribution to the esteemed cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster.
A well proportioned table of stable design which could work equally well as a lamp or side table .
