Description

Late C19th Italian bronze ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir study , after the antique, “Augustus Caesar of Prima Porto” .
Well detailed bronze reduction study after the antique marble original of Augustus Caesar , the first emperor of Rome . The 2 metre marble statue was discovered in 1863 at the Villa of Livia in Prima Porta , the home of the Emperor’s third and final wife Livia Drusilla. Carved by expert Greek sculptors the statue is assumed to be a copy of a lost bronze original displayed in Rome. The Augustus of Prima Porto is now displayed in the Vatican Museums.
The emperor is depicted in contrapposto stance , shown in his role of “Imperator” , the commander of the army. He is dressed in military clothing, wearing an eagle-decorated cuirass . The design of his armour includes images of the Roman deities including Mars . He is holding a consular baton , his right hand raised in the act of addressing the troops.
An iconic and powerful image of the first Roman Emperor .
In excellent original ‘fresh to market’ countryhouse condition with only one minor historic crack and dent to the edge of the circular base. Has achieved a consistent mellow patina and colour to the aged surface.
