Pair of mid C19th English cast-iron garden or terrace vases.
Pair of mid C19th English cast-iron garden or terrace vases. Good pair of classical design 'campana' shaped garden urns. Detachable 'egg-and-dart' cast rims onto fluted bodies with gadroon bases onto a spreading foot with a square plinth .
Appear to have original black paint finish and have not suffered from any subsequent paint layers, therefore showing good definition of casting. No breaks, cracks or damage , some rusting as to be expected.
Would work equally well outdoors or in, excellent hall-way or orangery feature.

Probably made in Coalbrookdale, Shropshire.

Pair of mid C19th English porcelain vases in ancient Greco-Romano classical style. Black-ground ovoid bodies each with twin gilded loop handles, decorated all-round with brightly-coloured classical figures and charioteers. Raised on round spreading foot with gilded rim.
In perfect ,unrestored condition. No factory marks , but probably produced by "Samuel Alcock & Co.", Cobridge ,Staffordshire, reknowned manufacturers of this type of 'Attic' or 'Etruscan' ware. Highly decorative classically-inspired vases of good large scale.

Quantity of mid C19th Chinese export carved 'mother of pearl' gambling chips or gaming counters
Quantity of mid C19th Chinese export carved 'mother of pearl' gambling chips or gaming counters. Produced in China for export to Europe ,these finely carved counters were made to order in various shapes and forms , often embellished with the Coat of Arms or heraldic device of the client.The fish-shaped counters all carved with scales and fin details , miniature works-of-art in their own right .Some here have the device of a baronet in a circle , comprising a brace of birds above a Baronets bar. Others are carved with a pagoda centre and shaped edges.
Great quality and wonderful iriridescence to the 'nacre' shell.
The skill in production and man-hours involved pro-rata far outweighs the cost shown here.

Exceptional quality scroll 'arabesque' marquetry-inlaid circular top , the inlay of burr-maple or figured satinwood contrasting with the rich rosewood ground. Raised on an elegant swollen column with turned top section . The tri-form concave platform base raised on flattened bun feet.

Excellent colour and patina , retaining its original finish . Waxed and cleaned in our workshops.

The top with minor marks and stains commensurate with age ,use and purpose.

Though no comparative examples have been identified, quality and form suggest a possible attribution to the celebrated firm of Gillows of Lancaster.

Rare C19th New Zealand marquetry/parquetry top tripod base occasional table in the manner of Anton Sueffert. Marquetry 'star-on-star' radiating motif circular top inlaid with New Zealand indigenous specimen timber veneers, thumb-moulded edge . The tripod scroll-foot base with carved finial and swollen turned stem.
The top fitted onto the base by wooden screw dowel , the shaped bearer beneath of distinctive shape and form .

The timbers used appear to include Totara , Rewarewa, Kohekohe and numerous others.

Made in the manner and style of the celebrated emigre cabinet-maker Anton Sueffert ,renown for this type of inlaid furniture and the use of native New Zealand timbers.

Excellent original condition with no losses to marquetry top.
Good original patina , has been cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

Rare C19th New Zealand specimen-wood top walnut side or lamp table. A fine and mint-clean example of a Victorian period parquetry-work specimen wood table . Almost certainly the work of the Bohemian emigre cabinet-maker Anton Seuffert , who was re known for his parquetry design furniture made in Auckland using native New Zealand woods .Octagonal top on 4-pillar turned supports onto cruciform base with leaf-carved scroll feet and central finial. The top inlaid with a large selection of exotic wood veneers , including walnut, ebony, rosewood, palm-wood, maple and amboyna. Geometric 'fan' design with star/compass-style centre, the edges with chevron inlay. No damage , losses, repairs or woodworm and good consistent colour. H 29 " x W 22" .New Zealand c.1870

Elegant reeded frame, scroll arms, and sabre legs ,with double-bar lumbar support with a finely carved central classical floral motif .Shaped and reeded top rail, with original cane-work/rattan seat and of typical Colonially-made pegged construction. Strikingly-figured exotic timber.
Amin Jaffer "Furniture from British India and Ceylon" illustrates a solid Calamander sofa table from Ceylon p.367 no. 176.

Rare matching pair of late C19th /early C20th Edwardian period satinwood inlaid mahogany octagonal urn-stands or occasional tables. Finely inlaid pair of George III period style 'Sheraton-revival' satinwood tables with octagonal galleried tops and inlaid shaped stretchers. Elegant flower-head design inlay to the cross-banded tops , with inlaid swags to the friezes . Raised upon finely tapering linlaid legs , terminating in brass-ball feet . Both fitted with a retracting slide with brass knop pull. The tops of the legs with decorative brass moulding .
All original condition , polish and finish .
No breaks ,losses or repairs.
One table suffering from minor cigarette scolding to area of top which could be re-polished if required.

Rare pair of early C19th George IV period mahogany salver stands, almost certainly attributable to "Gillows",Lancaster.
Rare pair of early C19th George IV period mahogany salver stands, almost certainly attributable to "Gillows",Lancaster. Designed to display silver salvers or porcelain chargers upon , these rare pair of stands are in excellent original condition . The lead-weighted and encased rectangular plinth bases have turned 'split' baluster-moulding lateral rests to house salvers at various angles. The scribed -edge, concave-top broad strut uprights being angled to offer safe support to the dishes.
Susan E.Stuart "Gillows of Lancaster and London",Vol.II , p.119, Plate 669, shows a similar example the design of which was illustrated in October 1826, made for Ferguson and Co. Made to support and display silver plate on a sideboard table (see Vol.I Plate 371).
Excellent original condition and colour .
Though lacking the impressed mark of the maker, the form, period, timber and quality of these stands , lead to an almost certain attribution to the esteemed and highly-regarded firm of Gillows of Lancaster.
One retaining original baize lining to underside of base, the other left exposed to show construction(can be re-baized if desired).
Note: A single similar unmarked stand sold Bonhams ,New Bond St.,London 18/11/09 2640.

Rare set of 4 grand mid C19th 'Country-House' carved gilt-wood corbel curtain-pole supports.

Superb set of 4 water-gilded carved corbel supports (ie 2 pairs or for use as a long set across a window).

Well-carved scrolling 'stiff-leaf' corbels each with apertures through to support the curtain poles. The scrolls with intricately carved flower-head detail. The flowers appear to be highly symbolic and romantic Myosotis or "Forget-me-nots" .

Mounted upon gilded flat wooden back-plates of stylised gothic outline .

In excellent original condition with minor rubbing and wear to the original gilding , showing atmospheric red gesso ground beneath. Some minor losses to gesso.

Fitted with original metal supports to provide strength when fitted and hung with drapes, which could easily removed if desired.

Interestingly the reverses with pencil inscriptions for the locations of original positioning , "North Front" etc .

Finely carved late C19th Chippendale-revival chairs faithfully copying important mid-Georgian period examples . Carved 'interlaced' and pierced ribbon splat backs with excellent attention to detail of the carving. The shaped top cresting rail with carved flower-head corners and leaf detail .Raised upon carved cabriole fore-legs with well-executed carved acanthus-leaf knees , terminating in scroll-form toes or "French feet" . The lower front seat rail of serpentine shape with carved moulded decoration.

The splat built in the traditional C18th chair-makers style with a two-piece 'shoe' joining to the frame of the chair. The rear splayed supports with a good raked angle.
Drop-in seats with aged red leatherette covering .

Historic minor repairs commensurate with age and use . Strong , sturdy frames .

Highly decorative side ,hall or dining chairs of broad period-style proportions .

Restrained reeded detail to tablet of top rail ,moulded decoration to 3-splat lumbar support backs and moulded bars. Generous, broad over-stuffed seats recently recovered in rose-pink self-patterned damask , original horse-hair upholstery with traditional brass-studded finish to tops of fore-legs, partially chamfered rear legs with gentle splay. Raised on plain tapering square section legs with H-stretchers beneath.
No breaks or repairs, good original rich patination .
