Large C19th bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze statue of "Diane de Gabies" after the antique
Large C19th bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze statue of "Diane de Gabies" after the antique.Great scale, wonderful patina and consistent colour, a superior quality casting in fine detail of this iconic sculpture. Depicting the goddess Artemis, the original marble statue was discovered during excavations in 1792 by the entrepreneur, dealer and antiquarian, Gavin Hamilton on the property of the Prince Borghese at Gabi, near Rome . In 1807 the sculpture was sold to Napoleon and was thence exhibited in the Louvre ,Paris, where it remains today .Named by the Greeks as Artemis , and called Diana in the Roman world ,the beautiful virgin goddess of hunting and wild nature is depicted standing in contrapposto position supported against a tree stump, dressed in a loose robe or 'chiton' ,buttoned at the shoulder, together with strapped Grecian sandals . The figure stands upon a separate and associated ebonised fluted-column support with carved ionic capital top.(Although purchased with the statue ,would obviously sell figure without column) Bears a scripted foundry mark "Stradelli" to rear of integral square base. H. (of bronze) 31 " . Overall H. on column 76 ". Italy c. 1870

Set of 6 early C19th Regency period mahogany and coromandel wood sabre-leg dining chairs.
Set of 6 early C19th Regency period mahogany and coromandel wood sabre-leg dining chairs. Very stylish set of 'High Regency' mahogany dining chairs with highly-figured coromandel inset panel backs and brass mounts. Wonderful faded colour mahogany with strikingly contrasting exotic coromandel veneered backs. Gilded-brass 'rope-twist' edges to the finely cross-banded panels. The shaped reeded and turned top-rail with brass rings , and the panel 'quartered' by brass 'bull-nose stud' mounts. Have been in strong sun-light hence some fading to mahogany frames, but this has achieved a stunning visual contrast. Have been recently re-upholstered in top quality striped linen covers onto the original shaped 'drop-in' seats. One chair has a very old repair to top rail which has been skilfully done and is almost undetectable. Strong ,sound frames and joints with no movement. The use of coromandel (also known as 'calamander') at this period ,imported from Ceylon ,illustrates the quality ,exclusivity and expensive build-cost of this rare set of chairs .The use of these highest quality timbers together with their metal design elements, point to a probable attribution to a leading London firm of cabinet-makers such as George Seddon , or possibly to the renowned Scottish firm of William Trotter of Edinburgh. Large C19th Italian bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir statue after the antique, of "Venus of Capua".
Large C19th Italian 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze statue, after the antique, of the "Venus of Capua".

The Venus of Capua , named after its place of discovery at the ruins of an ancient amphitheatre in Capua, southern Italy , is now on display in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale , Naples, Italy. A Roman study of the Greek goddess Aphrodite , the cult of Venus continued throughout the Roman period where she came to symbolise Rome's Imperial power. Like her Greek counterpart ,Aphrodite, Venus was intimately associated with love and beauty. The statues pose arising from originally holding a shield , the image of the Goddess portrays the desirability of military success and civic peace. Her foot is shown atop the helmet of Ares , God of War, and combines sexual allure and martial symbolism.

Good large-scale bronze reduction copy probably produced by Chiurazzi Foundry , Naples. The detailed cast decoration around the base is typical of the works from this celebrated foundry ,who were prolific producers of bronzes ,after the antique, for sale to 'Grand Tourists' , museums and educational institutions .

Consistent dark patina with hints of both green and brown hues .

C19th 'after the antique' Italian Neapolitan bronze fountain figure of seated fisherman.
C19th 'after the antique' Italian Neapolitan bronze fountain figure of seated fisherman. Well-cast 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze figure of a fisherman from the statue excavated at Pompeii in 1823. Discovered at the site of the "Casa Della Fontana Piccola" where it sat on the brink of the piscina of a shell and mosaic grotto, the sculpture depicts a seated study of a fisherman astride a rocky outcrop with a Bacchus mask fountain-spout beneath him . The figure has a verdegris 'faux excavation' aged patination , and was probably produced by 'Chiurazzi et Fils ' Foundry , Naples. The figure is shown bear-footed wearing a loose-fitting robe, his hands poised probably originally holding a fishing cane and a net, and a look of focussed concentration. Good incised detail to the hat , and the naturalistically-cast rock base with shell encrustation. The original now in the Museo Nazionale ,Naples. Excellent condition.
