Mid C19th carved giltwood oval-framed overmantel mirror with unusual carved fern motif decoration.
Mid C19th carved giltwood oval-framed overmantel mirror with unusual carved fern motif decoration .

The central oval-framed plate with applied surmount and side-pieces carved decoration featuring "Hart's-Tongue" fern fronds. Original throughout with good clear original mirror plate and back-boards. The original gilding with a gently aged patina, which in places has subtly worn through to show the decorative and atmospheric red-pink gesso ground beneath .

The "Hart's-Tongue" fern deriving it's name from the likeness of it's fronds in appearance ,to that of the tongue of an adult male red deer or hart . The leaf of the "Hart's-Tongue" fern was also used in folk medicine as a spleen tonic.

During the mid to late C19th , 'ferneries' and botanical collections of ferns were highly-desirable and fashionable . 'Pteridomania' (or fern craze) was a term coined by Charles Kingsley, clergyman and naturalist , to describe the fervoured collecting of British and exotic species of fern which gripped the country during this period.

It is likely this attractively designed mirror frame with its unusual and possibly unique fern decoration, was commissioned by such an aficionado , naturalist, horticulturist or botanist.

Designed to fit flush to ,and sit upon , the top of a mantle-piece or fire-surround .

C19th Italian bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir sculpture after the antique, of the Ufizzi boar or "Il Porcellino".
C19th Italian bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir sculpture after the antique ,of the Ufizzi boar or "Il Porcellino". Well-detailed casting mounted upon a 'portor' marble plinth base .The body hair of the boar particularly well- defined , and having a rich patina to the surface with only minor highlights. The snout having minor rubbing and wear , from its association with luck being gained from touching it.

The Hellenistic marble original now exhibited in the Ufizzi Museum , Florence, Italy. The original ,found in Rome and removed to Florence by the Medici, was associated from the time of its discovery with the Calydonian Boar of Greek myth.

A fountain figure based on the original was sculpted and cast by Baroque master Pietro Tacca (1577-1640), and a version now stands as a tourist attraction in the Mercato Nuevo in Florence.

C19th 'Country-house' cast plaster classical figure.
C19th 'Country-house' cast plaster classical figure. Interesting plaster figure of classical male subject depicted nude in contrapposto pose with raised arm , the torso wrapped in a fishing net . The figure stands upon a naturalistically modelled base against a rocky outcrop background . Of good scale with a worn grey paint finish in imitation of lead , some minor old repairs .
Flat-backed and flat right-hand side , probably conceived to stand in a hall-way or stair-way niche.

Figures of this type were produced in demand for classically-inspired decorative schemes and manufactured by firms such as the Italian-born Domenico Brucciani & Co. of London. Such figures were taken from marble works of Greek and Roman antiquity , and were regarded as essential requisites for the cultured interiors of well-travelled and educated gentlemen .

The 'Cast Courts' of the Victorian and Albert Museum , London , hold a vast and varied collection and examples of this type of art form .
