Interesting early C19th Regency period cast high-relief gilt-bronze lion’s mask on a gilded panel within a reeded ebonised frame , the verso with original trade label.
Well-cast gilded bronze stylised lion’s mask with open roaring mouth and a hirsute mane and beard . Mounted upon a gilt-wood panel, within a reeded and ebonised frame surround.
The verso bearing a pictorial and script written period paper trade label for “James Fry , No.13 High Street, CHELTENHAM” . The label with fascinating text listing the fact that they offer services including “gilding , looking glasses , mirrors, silvered and old frames , regilt , crystal and varnishing “ . “Varnishing in the best manner”.
Smart period decorative object with documented origin . Cheltenham being an important and fashionable spa town during the Regency period of the early nineteenth century.
Some historic wear and loss to the gilding on bronze mask and some minor loss to the gilding on wooden panel.
