Description

Pair of mid C19th Japanese Imari design porcelain vases probably by Samson of Paris .
Highly decorative pair of porcelain vases decorated in the vibrant colours of the Imari palette featuring vignettes and panels of peony and chrysanthemum floral motifs in hues of blue and iron red with gilded highlights on a white ground . Each vase fitted with a domed cover surmounted by a traditional mythical kylin or lion-dog .
The Parisian firm of Edme Samson et Cie founded in 1845 , is renowned for its quality porcelain copies of the designs of other types and manufacturers , including early C18th Japanese , Chinese and European wares . In this case the pair of vases are copies of important late C17th / early C18th Genroku period wares.
The tapering ovoid bodies in perfect condition with no damage or repairs .One dome cover with a minor historic chip to underside rim and the other with an historic minor professional repair. The lion-dog surmounts with minor chips and minor losses .
(*found inside one vase , a hand-written French retailer’s card and retail description from Jeune of St.Etienne , which , in our opinion , erroneously describes the vases as being C18th Japanese Imari ).
