Fine quality group of 3 early C19th Italian marble ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir architectural reduction models from ancient Rome .
1 . ‘Nero Belgio’ black marble scale-model of “The Lateran Obelisk” mounted upon a base of ‘giallo di Siena’ marble . Finely incised and engraved gilt highlighted lettering and hieroglyphics to all four faces of this scale model of the ancient Egyptian obelisk . Located in the square across from the Archbasilica of St.John Lateran in Rome. The stepped plinth base bears a gilt-lettered inscription and dedication to Emperor Constantine who removed the obelisk from Alexandria to Rome .
2. ‘Rosso antico’ red marble scale-model of “The Column of Marcus Aurelius’” mounted upon a black marble base. The Roman doric column with spiral relief depicting the Danubian or Marcomannic campaign victories of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius during 166-180 AD . Stepped pedestal base with incised and gilt lettered dedication , surmounted by a miniature bronze figure of the Emperor.
Located in Piazza Colonna , Rome .
3. ‘Giallo di Siena’ yellow marble scale-model of “The Column of Phocas” mounted upon a black marble base. This Roman monumental fluted Corinthian capital column is located in the Roman Forum . Dedicated and inscribed “Colonna Foca ” to the block base above a multi-stepped plinth , in honour of the Eastern Roman Emperor Phocas. Surmounted by a miniature bronze figure of the Emperor .
Architectural scale models of this type were produced as expensive souvenirs for wealthy and aristocratic tourists completing the ‘Grand Tour’ of the ancient classical sites and sights of Italy and Europe throughout the C18th and C19th.
Each of the 3 carved marble studies is in excellent original condition with no damage or losses , each having been skilfully executed with fine attention to detail using well-selected specimens of marble.
