Description

Trio of late C19th/ early C20th giant clam shells or “Tridacna Gigas” .

A graduated trio of highly-decorative natural history specimens . The exterior of the ribbed shells with a heavily-encrusted sea-washed aged surface , whilst the interiors have their natural off-white creamy luminescence and iridescence.
These wonders of the natural world are found in the shallow reefs of the South Pacific and Indian Oceans , the bivalve molluscs have sadly now become one of the most endangered clam species. They can have a life-span of over a 100 years and can develop to measure as much as 120 cm across and weigh 200 kgs. The largest of this trio displayed here, being 84 cm across and is a ‘two-man’ lift .
In overall good condition with wear , natural flaws and minor chips to extremities , having huge decorative and conversational appeal with ‘other-worldly’ deep-sea charm and fascination.
Would sell separately if required.
