Description

Pair of mid C19th cast-iron boot-scrapers in the form of a recumbent lion and a unicorn.
Scare pair of well-modelled and crisply-cast boot-scrapers depicting the Unicorn emblematic of Scotland and the Lion of England, after a design by John Crowley & Co., Kelham Iron Works , Sheffield , England.
Shown in recumbent poses the pair are each supported by a rear turned finial upright bracket with a ‘bladed’ edge lateral boot-scraping bar .
Both beasts retain an old black-painted surface and both are in remarkably complete and undamaged condition.
A smart and decorative pair of regal boot-scrapers of imposing design and scale which could serve equally well as andirons in a period fire-place setting.
* John Crowley established his foundry and Iron Works at Kelham Island , Sheffield in 1829, before moving to larger premises at Meadowhall in 1870 .
