Description

Large pair of late C19th Chinese Qing Dynasty carved hardwood water buffaloes and herd-boys.
Naturalistically and skilfully carved buffalo or ox sculptures depicted with their calves, mounted by boys astride their backs. The buffaloes with carved bone detail teeth and eyes.
Each mounted on a separate loose carved and pierced bespoke hardwood stand .
In Chinese culture a herd boy with a buffalo (considered to be in the same category as an ox in China) is often depicted taking respite after a busy ploughing season or harvest , symbolising an ideal life of peace , prosperity and harmony in agrarian China .
Excellent original condition with a rich colour and patina .
High quality decorative pair of opposing symmetrical sculptures of dramatic scale .
