Description

Rare early C19th brass marquetry inlaid table , the top fitted with a porcelain plaque by Chamberlains of Worcester .
Profusely brass-inlaid shaped cabriole leg occasional table of rectangular form , fitted with a single side drawer and platform below . The table with a dark patination, possibly stained pear-wood .
The brass-bound rectangular top inset with a beautifully painted rectangular porcelain plaque by the Chamberlain factory of Worcester , depicting a landscape and prospect of the City of Worcester. The scene from the north east of the city, shows the Cathedral and cityscape , with the chimneys of the porcelain works . The background features the Malvern Hills beyond.
Signed ‘Chamberlains’ to the bottom left-hand corner , and titled “Worcester” to the centre .
In excellent original condition with no losses or damage to the brass inlay . The porcelain plaque with minor historic rubbing to the paint in one small area.
The Chamberlain factory was established in Worcester in 1783 by Robert Chamberlain. The factory soon established an enviable reputation for the production of finely painted porcelain, and in 1802 Admiral Lord Nelson and his mistress Lady Hamilton visited and ordered an extravagant breakfast, dinner and dessert service . The Royal Warrant of The Prince Regent was awarded in 1807 .
Commissions such as this plaque were regularly undertaken , with views of landscapes and countryhouses particularly popular as ‘cabinet’ pieces .
