Description

Set of late C19th early C20th Edwardian period oak and brass weighing and height measuring scales by W & T. Avery , Birmingham.
Quality set of brass and oak countryhouse or club scales , with complete set of stacking ‘conical’ brass weights and with an engraved and calibrated adjustable height oak measuring pole . The balance beam with sliding ounce adjustment and cast with the maker's name of “W & T . Avery , Birmingham “ .
The shaped moulded-edge base platform with a step upholstered in it's original red leatherette with bound surround margins. The base fitted with a hinged flap at the rear , to store the loose brass weights for transportation. The whole raised on flattened concealed rectangular feet.
The scales weigh from 1-16 stone , whilst the height measures to 7 feet.
Established in Birmingham in 1818 , "W & T Avery Ltd " is a renowned British manufacturer of weighing scales and machines . In 1885 the company bought the legendary Soho Foundry , the former steam engine factory of James Watt & Co.
In excellent original condition, with a golden hue to the oak and aged mellow patination to brass.
