Description

Late C19th Italian bronze ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir reduction sculpture after the antique, “Lo Spinario “.
The Spinario also known as ‘Il Fidele’ or “The Thorn Puller” , is an ancient Greco-Romano Hellenistic bronze sculpture , originally recorded as sited outside the Lateran Palace in 1165 , the celebrated sculpture is now housed in the Palazzo dei Conservatori , Capitoline Museums , Rome , Italy . There is also a Roman marble version from the Medici collections in a corridor of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence .
The subject, thought to be a lowly shepherd boy , a faithful messenger, is depicted in intense concentration attempting to draw a thorn from the sole of his foot .
This well-cast bronze reduction of the iconic original, is mounted upon it’s original turned circular ‘rouge griotte’ marble base.
Good consistent patination to the bronze with hues of both green and chocolate brown .
