Early C19th bronze sculpture study of a Sphinx mounted on a ‘verde mare’ marble base.
Well-executed cast bronze study of the mythical Sphinx , the body being that of a lion whilst the head is human probably depicting a god or king . Lying in a prone pose with outstretched front legs , wearing a head-dress , the tail wrapped over it’s back , mounted on a rectangular block of pale green ‘verde mare’ marble.
Sculptures such as this were produced in the early C19th to satisfy a demand and fashion for all things Egyptian. Known as “Egyptomania” , a style era which followed on from the discoveries in the Ancient Egyptian world , Napoleon’s campaigns and the famous Naval victories against the French won by Nelson and the English fleet in “The Battle of the Nile”.
Leading designers and architects of the period , such as Thomas Hope , were greatly influenced by their travels to the Egyptian world and the new discoveries, incorporating design elements in furniture, objects and architecture reflecting the taste .
In excellent original condition with a good , rich , consistent colour and patina. No breaks or chips to the marble base .
