Description

Fine C19th Italian ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir carved serpentine marble ink-stand set with carved lava cameo profiles .
A southern Italian, Neapolitan, two-piece carved ‘prato verde’ or Serpentina Moschinata , marble inkstand with spiral gadrooned base and carved sectioned lid set with oval carved lava cameo profile studies of classical and Renaissance Italian philosophers , poets and literary luminaries with brass mounted surrounds. The centre of the lid with a turned knop handle set with a corresponding central carved lava cameo.
The underside of the lid fitted with a finely executed circular glazed ‘gouache’ or body-watercolour painting set within a brass mount ring , depicting two tourist figures visiting a ruinous classical site , portraying the baths at the excavated site of the doomed city of Pompeii.
The base section interior fitted with two brass-rimmed glass ink-wells and brass ferrules for pens or quills .
The different lava rock cameos having achieved their individual colours from the oxidisation and crystallised nature of the various cooled minerals from the volcanic action and eruption and consequent lava flow . These particular examples having probably been gleaned from the site of Mount Vesuvius in the Bay of Naples.
This type of inkstand was produced in the Naples area of Italy during the mid to late C19th as souvenirs for wealthy tourists visiting the ancient historic sites and sights of the European classical’ Grand Tour’ .
In excellent original condition, with only minor historic damage to one glass inkwell and some verdigris to the pen ferrules.
