Description

Pair of early C19th Italian gouache paintings in gilt frames after Guilio Romano attributed to Michelangelo Maestri .
Pair of watercolour and bodycolour allegorical studies titled in ink "Europa" and "Trionfo di Sileno" on black chalk backgrounds with lined edges and borders . The bottom lhs corner margins both inscribed in ink "Guilio Romano", in glazed gilt-wood frames with raised decoration .
Michelangelo Maestri was an Italian artist of the late C18th who died in Rome in 1812 . His finest compositions are based on motifs from antique frescoes discovered in Pompeii and Herculaneum and as in this case, from designs by Raphael or his principal pupil Guilio Romano (1499-1546). Such works by Maestri became very popular and were often purchased by European travellers during their 'Grand Tour' . Some of his most famous gouaches portray putti leading animals on a chariot and were inspired by ceiling frescoes in the salone of Villa Lante on the Janiculum Hill in Rome.
In excellent original 'as found 'country-house condition. Both benefit from lack of exposure to direct sunlight and retain good bright colouring . The late C19th gilt frames with some minor damages and losses .
Highly decorative pair of skilfully-executed gouache pictures evoking Ancient Rome and the 'Grand Tour' collectors of the late C18th and early C19th.
