Pair of late C19th Chinese Qing Dynasty carved hardwood sculptures of auspicious Mandarin ducks .
Well executed , carved stylised hardwood sculptures of a pair of Mandarin ducks . Depicted stood on naturalistic 'rocky' bases , with detailed feather carving and each fitted with carved bone and ebony eyes .
In Chinese culture and Feng Shui Mandarin ducks , and in particular a pair, are kept in a home to enhance and attract love . They are known as love ducks , as in real life too Mandarin ducks are single partner species. Once separated they do not live a long time and apparently grieve for their missing partner , and wait for their return. In Feng Shui they are a 'tool' that symbolises love and attracts and enhances love and passion amongst couples.
In excellent original condition with a rich colour and patina to the heavy quality Chinese rosewood.
