Description

Pair of C19th 'Grand Tour' souvenir miniature bronze figures of the boxers Creugas & Damoxenos after Canova.
Interesting pair of miniature bronze reduction statues of the monumental marble originals by Antonio Canova sculpted in 1802 .
The studies depict Antonio Canova's interpretation of the mythological pugilists Creugas and Damoxenos of Syracuse who fought for hours during the Nemean games without a decision . Canova's studies depict the moment they finally agreed to decide the contest by each taking an undefended blow. Creugas struck the first punch , striking Damoxenos on the head as the rules dictated, however in reply Damoxenos treacherously fatally struck Creugas on the side tearing out his intestines. The Argives disqualified Damoxenos, for killing his opponent and Creugas was posthumously declared the winner . The figures show Creugas posed defending his head in anticipation of the blow, whilst Damoxenos is modelled about to strike the fatal blow .
The marble originals by the Italian sculptor and architect Antonio Canova (1757-1822) are exhibited in the Vatican Museums, Museo Pio-Clementino, Octagon, Canova Hall , Rome , Italy.
Good 'chocolate' brown colour and patina with minor rubbing.
