Description

Late C18th/ early C19th George III period mahogany 2-door bookcase with lattice-grille door top and cupboard base.
Elegant and restrained design late Georgian period mahogany bookcase of practical proportions. The upper section fitted original brass lattice grilles enclosing 'ladder-rack' adjustable book shelves . Four original shelves each with a reeded front edge . The lower section with a shallow frieze section above well-chosen figured-mahogany panelled cupboard doors enclosing a single shelf .
Both the top of the bookcase cornice and waist with a simple reeded moulding. Both sets of doors fitted with their original reeded gilt-brass 'slamming' strip, both doors fitted with brass bolts to the edge of the frames , and fitted with locks together with original steel key .
The 'diamond' pattern lattice grilles in good condition with an aged patina. The mahogany bookcase having achieved a pleasing mellow , faded , consistent patination. Minor historic marks and wear commensurate with age, use and purpose.
The reverse with original backboards , the upper section of panelled form .
The whole raised on a stepped plinth base .
Constructed in the traditional manner being in two sections for ease of movement and transportation.
A good practical bookcase of classic Georgian period sophisticated design and restraint.
