Description

Late C19th Italian bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir, after the antique, "Mercury Resting" by Giorgio Sommer Foundry ,Naples.
Bronze reduction of the iconic sculpture of Mercury or Hermes , messenger or herald to the gods depicted resting on a rocky outcrop. The god is shown entirely naked except for his winged sandals or talaria , a scrolled missive in his left hand .
The statue signed on the rear edge "Fonderia Sommer Napoli" , the esteemed Neapolitan foundry of Giorgio Sommer (1834-1914) who produced high-class bronzes and souvenirs of classical sculpture to sell to wealthy 'Grand Tourists' visiting the classical sites and sights of Italy and Europe.
The original now exhibited at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples . A Roman adaptation of a Greek work of the 4th or 3rd century B.C , the bronzevwas discovered at Herculaneum in 1758 having been buried in the city by the eruption of Vesuvius.
In excellent original condition with a good rich colour and patination, only minor rubbed highlights from handling.
