Description

Fine quality late C19th Chinese Qing Dynasty carved hardwood scroll-ended 'altar' or console table of elegant proportions.
Free-standing tall carved huali hardwood altar-type table with well-carved simulated bamboo design with carved and pierced friezes decorated with fruiting vines .
The elegant carved uprights with intertwined bamboo-style decoration and shaped silhouette outlines. The ends joined with shaped and carved stretchers , the ends of the scroll-over ends with inset carved and pierced panels .
The base of each upright with a shallow carved calligraphic mark , possibly a signature of the maker . The leg finishing to the floor with a shaped foot.
The top with a 'bevelled' edge inset single-piece 'floating' panel of superb colour and patina. The whole table with a good consistent rich colour and patination, in excellent original condition with no damage or losses.
The use of symbolic bamboo carving is significant in Chinese culture. Bamboo is a symbol of Oriental beauty, and it represents the characteristics of moral integrity, modesty and loyalty. It is also admired for it's longevity and vitality because it can survive the harshest conditions of nature .
A decorative and practical table which could be used for a variety of purposes and multiple interior settings .
