Description

Late C19th Italian bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir reduction sculpture, after the antique , of "Apollo Belvedere ".
The figure of the God is depicted in contrapposto pose , depicted as an archer, a quiver of arrows slung across his back and having just shot an arrow, the bow being deficient as in the antique original.
The subject matter is thought to show the moment having just slain the Python or serpent guarding Delphi in mythology. The tree stump against which the figure stands , is cast in relief with the body of the serpent .
The "Apollo Belvedere " or the "Pythian Apollo " is a celebrated 2nd century AD Roman marble sculpture which was exhibited in the Belvedere courtyard and thence the Pio-Clementine Museum of the Vatican Museums, Rome , Italy . The original sculpture being unearthed in Rome , or nearby Anzio at the end of the 15th century .
Notable examples dating to the age of the Grand Tour can be found at Syon House, Kedleston Hall and the Sir John Soane Museum.
Good consistent patina and rich dark colour with minor rubbed highlights . Raised on an oval base and as the original in completely nude state .
