Description

C19th bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze reduction, after the antique, of "The Warwick Vase" .
Well-cast bronze copy of the iconic ancient Roman marble vase known as "The Warwick Vase" , inscribed and signed 'Reduction Sauvage'. Mounted on a rouge marble plinth base.
The vase is richly carved with 3-dimensional faces of Bacchic gods and intertwined leaf and grape-vine detail related to the cult of the Roman god of wine , Bacchus ( the Greek God Dionysus). The front carved with a lion mask and pelt . The twin handles of intertwined grape vines , the top rim cast with ovolo design .
"The Warwick Vase" is an ancient Roman marble vase which was discovered at Hadrians Villa , Tivoli , Rome , Italy in 1771 by the Scottish antiquarian, Gavin Hamilton. The vase , believed to have been conceived as a ritual drinking vessel, was one of many fine sculptures with which the Emperor Hadrian adorned the gardens of his palatial villa. The vase found in fragments in the silts of Lake Tiburtina , was reconstructed by Piranesi for Sir William Hamilton, British envoy to the Court of Naples . From Hamilton's collection it passed to his nephew George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, from where it's title derives . It is now on exhibition in the Burrell Collection near Glasgow .
The scripted mark on the edge of the cast , "Reduction Sauvage" ,relates to the patented device created by Pierre Louis Sauvage ( 1786-1857) in 1832 , to produce bronze reductions of important sculpture , the method was widely used in the nineteenth century by the Susse Freres Foundry in Paris.
Good consistent dark green/ brown patination, mounted on a highly-figured rouge marble stepped plinth base.
