Description

Late C17th / early C18th Japanese Edo period porcelain bowl and cover decorated in the Imari palette.
Rare early and large Japanese circular bowl and cover of unusual form in 'as found' country-house condition with historic restored and riveted damage and repairs. The large circular bowl base with restored riveted crack to the body , whilst the domed cover has a repaired break and chip . The lid with a circular knop handle .
The whole decorated in typical Imari colour palette of colbalt blue , iron-red and green on a white body with gilt highlights. The body with an unusual bands of decoration together with typical floral and trailing flower-head detail. The foot-rim with a trailing blue and white band of decoration .
A fine early piece of Japanese Imari of impressive scale and proportions. A perfect period complement to early English walnut , oak and mahogany furniture of the early eighteenth century. Rare and expensive Japanese porcelain of this early period can be found in the finest aristocratic , stately and country houses of Europe, having been collected , revered and coveted by connoisseurs and collectors for centuries.
Pre-dating European porcelain production , the arrival of these exotic and colourful imported wares from Japan in the late C17th would have been revered and marvelled at by Europeans .
