Description

Pair of early C19th brass-bound oak log or peat fireside buckets fitted with brass lion-mask ring handles.
Useful and decorative pair of buckets of oak staved and brass coopered ring construction. The lip edges of the tops with distinctive 'chip'-carved decoration , alluding to possibly their Irish origin .
Each fitted with a pair of large well-cast gilded brass lion-mask ring handles , and triple brass bands.
Excellent and practical fireside accessories in good original and strong condition. Natural shrinkage to the timbers has caused some minor gaps between the fixed brass bands and the oak bodies , but not loose or showing any movement .
Good original dark patina to the oak , and nice oxidised brass patination to the coopered rings and handles .
Often to be found in large and noble houses of the C18th and C19th, buckets of this type would have been used to carry and store fuel for the fire , logs ,peat or turf .
Have been sympathetically cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
