Description

C19th William IV period rosewood writing or library table in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster and London.
Fine quality writing table of free-standing symmetrical form , fitted with 2 mahogany-lined frieze drawers and raised on 'standard end' type supports with 'hockey-stick' legs in-filled with well-carved panels of fret ,strap-work and lozenge decoration . The underside of the base joined by 2 high stretcher bars to provide stability.
Each end of the top fitted with a shaped and pierced decorative gilt-brass gallery, the central writing panel retaining its original black leather inset surface with a simple tooled edge.
The legs each fitted with their original brass box castors , all stamped "Cope's Patent" . The drawers each fitted with brass key escutcheons and locks ,and supplied with the original steel key.
In excellent original condition with a rich patina and colour to the figured rosewood. Minor shrinkage crack to the board of the top surface beneath the leather.
The design, choice of timber, quality of build together with use of "Cope's Patent' castors all point to a probable attribution to the esteemed cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster and London.
