Description

Impressive pair of early C20th giltwood floor-standing candle-lamps or torcheres in the neo-classical C18th style.
Tall pair of torchere lamps drawing their inspiration from classical athenienne type ancient oil lamps, in the the manner of the late C18th designer , architect and neo-classicist, Robert Adam .
The tripod leaf-carved and reeded upright supports terminating in lion's paw feet , with carved and lobed central detail. The solid plinth bases of sloping stepped tri-form design with period-style 'pounced ground' panels to the concave sides, band of guilloche style carving and classically-inspired ram's head decoration to the corners.
The triple carved and tapering shaped uprights each supporting a faux green marble decorated bowl, in imitation of an oil vessel reservoir. The tops fitted with cast-brass candle knozzles which house removable Bristol-type green glass photophores or 'storm shades' .
Excellent pair of C18th design lights to add period style elegance to an entrance porch or a hall-way.
Good sympathetic aged patina to the gilding . Minor areas of wear showing the red gesso ground 'bleeding' through adding to the C18th period style atmosphere .
Well-balanced construction with stable weighted bases.
