Description

Impressive pair of early C20th giltwood floor-standing candle-lamps or torcheres in the C18th neo-classical Adam style .
Tall pair of torchere lamps drawing their inspiration from classical athenienne type ancient oil lamps, being copies of an C18th design by Robert Adam and the originals probably made by Thomas Chippendale .
The tripod leaf-carved and reeded upright supports terminating in lion's paw feet , with carved and lobed central detail. The solid plinth bases of sloping stepped tri-form design with period-style 'pounced ground' panels to the concave sides, band of guilloche style carving and classically-inspired ram's head decoration to the corners.
The triple carved and tapering shaped uprights each supporting a faux green marble decorated bowl, in imitation of an oil vessel reservoir. The tops fitted with cast-brass candle knozzles which house removable Bristol-type green glass photophores or 'storm shades' .
Excellent pair of C18th neo-classical design lights to add period style elegance to an entrance porch or a hall-way.
Good sympathetic aged patina to the gilding . Minor areas of wear showing the red gesso ground 'bleeding' through adding to the C18th period style atmosphere .
Well-balanced construction with stable , weighted bases.
