Early C19th George IV period mahogany 'dwarf' glazed bookcase.
Neatly-proportioned 2-part mahogany bookcase or cabinet fitted with 2 sets of double doors retaining their original glass panels . Both sections fitted with original adjustable shelves . Each pair of doors fitted with their original central reeded brass 'slamming' strip .
Raised upon 4 carved lobe-shaped feet fitted with original brass cup castors . The whole bookcase with decorative 'split-reel' turned mouldings. The top having a polished surface for display . The side of base fitted with an unusual hinged miniature side door with a knob handle , which allows access into the cabinet , obviously a bespoke feature incorporated for the original owner of the cabinet.
Constructed from a fine grade of figured mahogany which has achieved a good rich and consistent patina.
In excellent original condition, has been cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
Has a number of features, such as the grade of timber , quality of build and use of 'split-reel' mouldings, which point to a probable attribution to the esteemed cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster.
