Description

Pair of early C19th Regency period scagliola columns.
Finely-made pair of faux siena marble sculpture stands/columns with simulated white statuary marble tops and rings to the base. Raised upon square wooden ebonised plinth bases.
The simulated siena marble columnar bodies of a particularly striking colour with a well-veined and striated finish . The capped simulated white marble tops with some minor wear and marks commensurate with age , use and purpose .
Scagliola being a decorative Italian technique (literally translates from the Italian scaglia meaning 'chips' ) whereby a composite stucco body is created and coloured using bonded plaster which can then be shaped , oiled and polished to simulate marble. The scagliola technique came into fashion in C17th Tuscany as an effective substitute for costly marble inlays.
Highly decorative pair of architecturally inspired column stands , for displaying classical objects or busts .
