Description

Late C19th Italian bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir sculpture after the antique of "The Dancing Faun of Pompeii". Cast to the same scale as the iconic original bronze study excavated at ill-fated Pompeii in 1830 from the site of "The House of the Faun" ("Casa del Fauno") which is now housed in the 'Museo Archeologico Nazionale', Naples ,Italy . The sculpture was located in the property at the lip of the 'impluvium' , a basin used for catching rain-water. Produced with a heavily verdigris /'faux excavation' patina ,this iconic image of the horned ,bearded and tailed dancing mythical woodland 'faun' creature in ecstatic pose ,is mounted upon a circular unpolished thick grey slate base. The Pompeian discovery almost certainly being a Roman copy of an Hellenistic original . The raised arm has a slightly loose joint where the original pin has been set. A good large-scale, detailed casting probably produced by 'Chiurazzi et Fils ' Foundry ,Naples, Italy. Examples of this theatrical and visually-arresting bronze sculpture can be found adorning the great homes and gardens of the world .
