Description

C19th carved white statuary marble bust of "Flora". Beautifully carved marble study of the Roman mythological goddess of flowers and the season of Spring, a symbol for nature and flowers. In Greek mythology she was known as the nymph "Chloris" .This elegant study shows the goddess dressed in a loose toga or shoulder-buttoned 'chiton', with a garland of flowers around her head, her hair tied back in a ribbon . She bears a serene, calm expression ,with a hint of a smile playing on her lips. Mounted on the original turned socle base , and with carved open "hollow" back. The reverse bears a signature for Edward Hodges Baily R.A ,(sic "E.H.Baily R.A" ) but despite the undoubted quality of the sculpture , we believe this to be a later inscription . (E.H.Baily 1788-1867 was a renowned sculptor of Bristol origin , whose works included the study of Nelson for the column in Trafalgar Square, London.) The sculpture has spent some recent years outside beneath a garden loggia ,and has acquired some weathering and a minor repaired chip to both the socle rim and to a ribbon to the back of her hair onto the neck. Importantly no deep damage to the surface has occurred and the face in particular, retains a smooth polished finish .Would work equally as well as an interior piece ,as it would in an orangery, conservatory or garden setting.
