Description

Pair of late C19th bronze 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze lions after Antonio Canova. Well-cast pair of bronze reductions originally sculpted from marble in 1792 by Antonio Canova (1757-1822) for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St.Peters Basilica, Rome. The sleeping lion is symbolic of the Pope's moderation , whilst the vigilant lion represents his energetic work. Good 'chocolate' brown patination with some rubbed highlights to the manes. Copies of various sizes and materials adorn some of the world's greatest houses and institutions, including a pair at Chatsworth the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire. L 9" x D 4". Italy c. 1880
