Description

Set of 6 early C19th Regency period mahogany and coromandel wood sabre-leg dining chairs. Very stylish set of 'High Regency' mahogany dining chairs with highly-figured coromandel inset panel backs and brass mounts. Wonderful faded colour mahogany with strikingly contrasting exotic coromandel veneered backs. Gilded-brass 'rope-twist' edges to the finely cross-banded panels. The shaped reeded and turned top-rail with brass rings , and the panel 'quartered' by brass 'bull-nose stud' mounts. Have been in strong sun-light hence some fading to mahogany frames, but this has achieved a stunning visual contrast. Have been recently re-upholstered in top quality striped linen covers onto the original shaped 'drop-in' seats. One chair has a very old repair to top rail which has been skilfully done and is almost undetectable. Strong ,sound frames and joints with no movement. The use of coromandel (also known as 'calamander') at this period ,imported from Ceylon ,illustrates the quality ,exclusivity and expensive build-cost of this rare set of chairs .The use of these highest quality timbers together with their metal design elements, point to a probable attribution to a leading London firm of cabinet-makers such as George Seddon , or possibly to the renowned Scottish firm of William Trotter of Edinburgh. H (of backs)34" x W 18" x D 18"x H(of seat)18".
