Description

C19th 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze study of "Mercury Resting" after the antique .Nice scale casting of the iconic statue of demi-god "Mercury" or "Hermes", resting upon a naturalistically cast rocky outcrop. Known in mythology as the messenger to the Gods ,he is depicted naked, sat in his winged sandals with a missive in his left hand. A well-cast copy of the Hellenistic bronze original which was excavated at the Villa of the Papyri, Herculaneum in 1758 , and now on display in the 'Museo Archeologico Nazionale ',Naples.
