Large early C20th patinated spelter (white-metal) study of a lion after Thomas Francois Cartier. Realistically modelled study of a snarling male lion standing upon a naturalistically-cast 'rocky' base. Some losses to gilt on rear flanks (shown), but no damage or repairs. Thomas Francois Cartier was born in Marseilles ,France 1879-1943 .He studied under Georges Gardet and specialised in lion and big cat studies, which were cast both in bronze and white-metal(as in this example).The sculptor has captured both the majesty and ferocity of the beast in this impressively scaled study.
