Description

Magnificent set of 8 C19th 'Irish Chippendale' style mahogany dining chairs. Boldly carved mahogany Chippendale-style chairs (6 singles + 2 armchairs) with double eagle (or Phoenix bird) head top rail, pierced rosette centre splat ,leaf and feather carved detail ,standing on cabriole legs with acanthus leaf-wrapped knees and 'claw-and-ball' feet. The pair of armchairs have shaped ,swept arms with eagle's-head terminals. Old green leather/hide over-stuffed upholstered broad seats with close-nail studs (minor variances). Though from the late C19th , these chairs have achieved a wonderful 1750's period-style patina and colour through use and regular waxing. The depth of this 'skin'/ patina of age and wear is impossible to replicate or overstate its quality. A rare and powerful set of 8 dining chairs of outstanding style and in exceptional condition. Probably produced in Dublin by a firm of leading cabinet-makers ,such as James Hicks ,Robert Strahan & Co. ,or Michael Butler Ltd.,who specialised in such revivalist period furniture.
